We’re proud that our Swarthmore patients continue to refer us to their friends. We understand how important a perfect smile is in today’s world, and we give each patient the absolute best possible care available.

Orthodontic treatment can be prescribed for both health and aesthetic reasons. If you or your child is affected by any of the conditions below, please call one of our convenient offices as soon as possible.

  • Underbite
  • Bucked teeth
  • Misaligned jaw
  • Open bite
  • Chewing problems
  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Spaces between teeth
  • A “deep” bite

All of these conditions can be successfully treated by an orthodontist like Dr. Cari.

Understanding Orthodontic Treatment

No matter which treatment you and Dr. Cari opt for, each has the same underlying idea behind it. Braces and other appliances exert gradual pressure on teeth in order to move them into the desired positions. Frequent adjustments make it possible for an orthodontist to guide the teeth in the shortest amount of time possible. It is important to follow all of the doctor’s instructions carefully and to keep your mouth clean while braces or other devices are in place.

Phase I treatment can correct minor conditions such as overbites, crossbites, and underbites using partial braces or expanders. We would like to see your child between ages 6 and 9 in order to evaluate them for this phase of treatment.

Once all of the adult teeth are in, we can evaluate your child for Phase II treatment, which consists of braces or an alternative treatment. The patient’s smile can usually be corrected in 1 to 2 years. And since Dr. Cari has two offices that are convenient to Swarthmore, you will never need to miss an appointment. A large percentage of patients don’t need a 2-phase approach to treatment, and can be treated with a single comprehensive treatment plan. Doctor Cari will help guide you and explain which approach is best.

Braces

Braces are the most common method to straighten teeth and correct bites. At our Kennett Square and Media offices, we offer a variety of types of braces in order to give you as many treatment options as possible.

Self-ligating braces avoid the old-fashioned elastic ties in order to eliminate the friction that they create. This makes for quicker and less painful treatment. These are also offered in a clear option which may be attractive to both teen and adult patients.

Speed self-ligating braces use a spring mechanism to straighten teeth more quickly than traditional braces. They are smaller, less conspicuous, and trap less food than their older counterparts as well.

Invisalign

Invisalign is one of our most popular alternatives to braces for straightening teeth. The removable aligners give the patient the flexibility to remove the devices when necessary and they avoid the unsightly wires and brackets associated with braces. Invisalign aligner trays are made of thin, smooth plastic and are nearly invisible.
