We will then discuss and demonstrate any recommended treatment. Please feel free to follow up with us at any time after the initial visit if you have any further questions.

Media Families Trust Dr. Cari When It’s Time to See an Orthodontist

Dr. Cari treats patients throughout the Media, PA area who know how important a clean, aesthetic and healthy smile is in your personal and professional life. There are various conditions that orthodontists treat that can cause pain or difficulty in chewing, so orthodontic work is as much a health issue as an aesthetic one.

Here are some of the conditions that can be treated by an orthodontist:

  • Bucked or protruding upper front teeth
  • A “deep” bite (upper front teeth cover too much of the lower teeth)
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crowded or overlapped teeth
  • Problems with chewing
  • Misaligned jaw or misalignment between upper and lower teeth
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Damage from excessive thumb sucking

How Does Orthodontics Work?

There are a variety of treatments that are offered by orthodontists to treat the conditions above. Orthodontists are specialists and only practice orthodontics, so they are aware of all of the treatment options and can recommend the best one for your particular issue.

Whether you opt for traditional metal braces or another kind of appliance, the device will correct your malocclusion (misalignment) using gentle, continuous pressure. Phase I treatment, which begins between ages 6 and 10, often uses an orthopedic device, the expander or partial braces to provide space for developing teeth and to correct conditions such as overbites, crossbites, and underbites. Phase II treatment can consist of traditional braces, self-ligating Damon brace or Speed braces, or Invisalign removable aligners. Phase II treatment begins after all of adult teeth emerge, usually between ages 11 and 13.

The typical treatment time is from one to two years, and a specific estimate will be given to you prior to starting treatment. It is important to maintain excellent hygiene habits and attending appointments as scheduled. Since Dr. Cari has 2 offices convenient to Media, PA, we make it easy for you to get to appointments as needed.

Braces

Metal braces are still a standard treatment, but they have evolved a lot since you may have had them as a kid! The brackets and wires are far less noticeable than they used to be, and they are designed not to trap food as much as the older metallic braces did. Dr. Cari also exclusively uses self-ligating Damon Braces and Speed braces, both of which require up to 40% shorter treatment time as well as fewer office visits. This technology is also offered in a ceramic brace that is tooth colored to make the braces less noticeable.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a revolutionary treatment option that uses a custom set of clear aligner trays that can be removed. The trays are changed every three days to two weeks to gradually align the teeth. You can avoid metal braces entirely using Invisalign, so it’s a great option for adults.
